Clemson vs South Carolina is the biggest game of the year in the state of South Carolina. The two schools first met on the football field in 1896, and their annual meeting, known as the Palmetto Bowl, has become one of the most heated in-state rivalries in college football. It usually closes the regular season at the end of November, which means the result often carries conference, bowl or playoff consequences on top of a year of bragging rights.

The early years and "Big Thursday"

For more than six decades, the game was played in Columbia on a Thursday during the South Carolina State Fair. "Big Thursday" was a statewide holiday atmosphere: schools and businesses closed, and fans traveled from across the state to the fairgrounds. The tradition ran until 1959. From 1960 the game moved to a home-and-home format, alternating between the two campuses, and to the end of the season, where it has stayed.

The rivalry has deep roots beyond football. Clemson was founded as an agricultural and military college, while South Carolina was the state's flagship university in the capital. The difference between the schools, and the fans' feelings about it, has shaped the rivalry since the 19th century.

Memorable eras

Clemson's 1980s dominance

Clemson won the national championship in 1981 under coach Danny Ford, and the program's success in the 1980s gave the Tigers the upper hand in the series for much of the decade.

The Spurrier streak

Steve Spurrier, the former Florida coach, turned South Carolina into a winner in the late 2000s. His Gamecocks beat Clemson five years in a row from 2009 to 2013, the longest winning streak for South Carolina in the series and a point of enormous pride for Gamecock fans.

Clemson's modern run

Under Dabo Swinney, Clemson became a national power, winning national championships after the 2016 and 2018 seasons. The Tigers won seven straight meetings with South Carolina from 2014 through 2021. The 2020 game was not played, because the pandemic led the SEC to schedule conference games only.

A rivalry tightening again

In recent seasons the rivalry has become more competitive again, with South Carolina winning close games at Clemson in 2022 and 2024. For both fan bases, the late-November date remains the most important on the calendar.

Traditions

  • Running down the Hill – At home games, Clemson players touch Howard's Rock and run down the hill into Memorial Stadium, a ritual famously described as "the most exciting 25 seconds in college football."
  • "2001" and Sandstorm – South Carolina enters Williams-Brice Stadium to the opening of "Also sprach Zarathustra," and the stadium shakes to "Sandstorm" during big moments.
  • Orange vs garnet – In the week of the game, much of the state picks a side, and families split by the rivalry are a familiar story.

More than football

The rivalry carries into every sport the two schools play. Their baseball programs, both among the strongest in the country, play an annual series that draws huge crowds, and the women's basketball meetings have gained attention as South Carolina built a national powerhouse under Dawn Staley. Some years the schools have competed for an overall trophy covering results in all sports.

Why it matters

South Carolina has no major professional sports teams, so college athletics carry an outsized place in the state's identity. That is what makes the Palmetto Bowl special: it is not just a game between two good programs, but a yearly vote on which half of the state gets to talk loudest until next November.
